Learning from the Land
Research The Blue Ridge Center welcomes proposals for guest researchers to use our land as their laboratory. Researchers may be students, academics, partner public agencies, or merely interested in our mission. Student researchers also may propose a project that provides summer housing and equipment use. University of Louisville Professor Wayne Lee and his students are developing a complete parcel history of all the land in our valley. Ongoing archaeology at the Blue Ridge Center. Millsaps College and other partner institutions are in a multi-year study to discover and interpret the settlement history of our land. Raven Rocks biological inventory. In a unique partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conference, students at Millsaps College, led by Prof. Deborah Mann, are developing an ecological survey of conservation land. The land had been purchased by neighbors who wanted to protect the trails viewshed from development. The survey will help the owners create a long-term management plan for their land. Pine shoot beetle survey. The pine shoot beetle is a non-native species that first appeared in Ohio in 1992. It infests many species of pine, causing damage to trees and economic losses. Eric Day of Virginia Tech is using Lindgren funnel traps to monitor the arrival of the beetles, then to work with tree growers to reduce the beetle's impact.
