Potomac Watershed Small Grants Program

Map of the Potomac WatershedThe Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship is interested in promoting and strengthening conservation communities and bioregional initiatives. This grant program focuses on groups and programs that address issues within the Potomac Watershed region that:

  • Build on community and regional strengths and assets.
  • Stimulate support from other funding sources.
  • Respond creatively to community problems.
  • Serve a broad segment of the watershed region.
  • Address underlying causes rather than symptoms.
  • Increase cooperation and coordination among program providers.

The Blue Ridge Center's Small Grants program invites proposals from nonprofit groups operating in the Potomac Watershed, a geographic area including:

  • Northern Virginia
  • Central Maryland
  • Eastern West Virginia
  • South-central Pennsylvania
  • Washington, D.C

The Robert and Dee Leggett Foundation will award grants for a wide variety of environmental stewardship projects to eligible organizations. Grants will be managed by the Blue Ridge Center.

GRANT SIZE
Grants generally range from $3,000 to $5,000, with a maximum of $15,000.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
Organized groups and nonprofit organizations undertaking environmental, conservation, and preservation programs in the Potomac Watershed region are eligible to apply.

GRANT-MAKING PRIORITIES
Priority will be given to groups based and operating in the Potomac Watershed region, as defined above. In addition, priority will be placed on work and projects that serve a broad segment of the Potomac Watershed region and that network and partner with other nonprofit organizations. In some circumstances, general support grants will be considered; however, specific project or program proposals are encouraged.

APPLICATION DEADLINES
Applications must be postmarked by March 15, 2001, in order to be considered. Applicants are discouraged from sending proposals via special delivery or Federal Express.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Applicants should submit a proposal with the following components:

  • Cover sheet with contact, address, email, phone, and executive summary.
  • Introductory description, no more than three pages, of the organization, its history, mission, key programs, and the program or project proposed. The proposal should define the geographic area served and target audience.
  • List of board of directors and their background.
  • List of key staff and their background.
  • List of funding sources for past two years.
  • Most recent annual report (if not produced, a recent newsletter), most recent Form 990 (if available), and current fiscal budget.

GRANT REVIEW
Blue Ridge Center representatives may contact applicants for a phone or face-to-face interview. Grants will be announced by September 30, 2001.

Organizations receiving a grant will be requested to provide a final report.
