The Potomac River watershed covers 14,670 square miles. It includes the Potomac River, its tributaries, and hundreds of communities that are diverse in character — but that all share a Potomac watershed "address."

In 2000, the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship supported collaborative efforts among land trusts in the watershed through a partnership with the Potomac Conservancy. The Blue Ridge Center provided a grant to support the Conservancy's leadership in a watershed-wide series of public events called Potomac Watershed Weekend.

More than 60 partner organizations and agencies cooperated on some 30 events in the first year. Events included stream clean-ups, outdoor activities, and small festivals — all celebrating the watershed and the role of conservation easements in protecting it.
